After watching the first videos on YouTube, I was convinced I could build a motorhome on my own. However, that confidence started to fade very quickly.

The more I talked about my idea with friends and acquaintances, the more times I heard the same response.

«It's impossible.»

«You will never get it type-approved.»

«It's too complicated.»

Curiously, hardly anyone talked about the construction. The biggest fear was always the paperwork and official recognition. Little by little I too began to doubt. Perhaps they were right. Perhaps it was better to leave the project in the hands of people who already did this for a living.

That was when a friend, who knew I had been interested in this world for a long time, sent me a TikTok video.

In a few seconds they showed how they converted vans into motorhomes and how they subsequently got them legally approved in Spain.

It was the first time I'd seen real people doing exactly what I wanted to do.

A few days later we decided to go and meet them.

His workshop was almost seven hundred kilometres from my home.

Throughout the journey we talked about the same thing: how much it might cost, how the whole process actually worked and whether it was as complicated as everyone said.

When we arrived we found a small garage. There were two or three vans and a couple of people working on them. They showed us a campervan that was already finished. Honestly, I wasn't all that impressed. There were details that I would have done differently. Another project had a more careful finish, but actually that wasn't the most important thing.

What really changed the way I thought was something else.

Those people were immigrants, just like me. They weren't a big company or a factory. They were normal people who had learned how to convert vans and, above all, how to get them legally approved.

At that moment I felt that all the pieces were starting to fall into place.

For months I had thought the biggest problem was the paperwork. After that visit I understood that the problem wasn't the paperwork.

The problem was that I didn't know how the whole process worked.

When I got home I started investigating on my own. I looked for engineers who specialised in vehicle approvals, read the requirements and realised that everything had a procedure. It wasn't a matter of luck or doing something impossible. You simply had to know the process and do it properly.

There was another detail that also influenced my decision.

They had quite a long waiting list. Sometimes I think that, if they'd been able to start the project immediately, they probably would have built my first motorhome.

However, that wait forced me to crunch the numbers again calmly.

I came to a very simple conclusion.

If I built the campervan myself, not only would I save a significant amount of money, but I would also learn throughout the entire process and be able to make the exact campervan I wanted, without having to adapt to someone else's decisions.

On the way back home I was no longer thinking about whether it was possible or not.

I had stopped worrying about that.

I was only thinking about one thing.

Which van was he going to buy first.

That journey did not make the construction any easier.

What changed was the way I saw her.

For the first time I was completely convinced that building my own campervan was a real goal.
